Fun facts about how Thanksgiving started and how it has evolved over the years:

How Thanksgiving Started:

  • The First Thanksgiving (1621): The "First Thanksgiving" is believed to have been a three-day feast in 1621 at Plymouth Colony, where Pilgrims and Wampanoag Native Americans came together to celebrate a successful harvest. It was more of a harvest festival than the holiday we know today.

  • No Turkeys Mentioned: There is no historical record that turkey was actually served at the first Thanksgiving. The meal likely included venison, wild fowl (possibly ducks or geese), corn, squash, and beans.

  • Not an Annual Tradition: The original 1621 feast did not immediately become an annual event. Various colonies had days of thanksgiving sporadically, often to celebrate specific events like the end of droughts or military victories.

  • Sarah Josepha Hale: A magazine editor nicknamed the “Mother of Thanksgiving,” Sarah Josepha Hale campaigned for decades in the 1800s to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday. Her efforts influenced President Abraham Lincoln's 1863 proclamation.

How Thanksgiving Has Changed Over the Years:

  • National Holiday: In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday, to be celebrated on the last Thursday of November, to help unite a country torn by Civil War.

  • Date Change: In 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved Thanksgiving up a week earlier to extend the holiday shopping season during the Great Depression. This was met with controversy, and in 1941, Congress officially established Thanksgiving as the fourth Thursday in November.

  • Modern Traditions:

    • Turkey as the Main Dish: Turkey became the centerpiece of Thanksgiving dinners by the 19th century, partly because it was abundant and large enough to feed a family.

    • Stuffing and Pumpkin Pie: These dishes became popular additions over time, symbolizing autumn harvests.

  • Parades and Football: The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade began in 1924, introducing giant balloons and floats. Football games on Thanksgiving Day started in the late 1800s and became a beloved tradition.

  • Day of Giving: In recent decades, Thanksgiving has also become associated with charitable activities like food drives and volunteering to help those in need.

  • Black Friday: The day after Thanksgiving now marks the start of the holiday shopping season, known as Black Friday, which has become a significant economic event.

Fun Tidbit:

  • The President of the United States traditionally "pardons" a live turkey every Thanksgiving, sparing it from becoming dinner. This tradition became more formalized in the late 20th century.
